The island of Corregidor in the Philippines was a major flash point in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The American military spent millions defending the strategic location, but its troops were eventually overrun by the sheer number of enemy forces—who would soon send the captured U.S. soldiers on the infamous Bataan Death March. But even in all the seemingly hopeless privation and suffering of a POW camp, Johnathan Wainwright, the captured American commander, boldly claimed a victory while surrounded by the enemy on all sides.
